Breathtaking. Dangerous. Nitrate.

A new and unique four-day film festival: The Nitrate Picture Show at George Eastman House’s vintage and renovated Dryden Theater in Rochester, NY, will present the rare opportunity to see vintage 35mm nitrate prints from the collection of George Eastman House and other international archives.

George Eastman House are keeping the actual titles a surprise, except for the opening night gala of William Wellman’s 1937 film A Star is Born, in the presence of his son, William Wellman, Jr.

Did you know that the origin of the expression silver screen came from the silver nitrate stock that was used by all commercial films until the early 1950s? It glowed on the screen. Because of its volatile nature, when stored improperly it can be highly inflammable. For this reason, very few film theaters today have a license to show nitrate films, The Dryden at Eastman House being one of them.
