This loose re-imagining of a traditional medieval epic, in which contemporary African migrants take the place of Serbian national heroes, succeeds where other films have failed. Oscar-nominated Stefan Arsenijević has created an utterly compelling love story between two Ghanaian refugees. He actively subverts some of the most commonly held beliefs around not just the migrant crisis but people on the margins, in general, by focusing on the couple as complex, fully realized people whose relationship and tribulations propel the narrative forward. This is a gripping and moving story, beautifully directed, written, and acted. It will engross you from the first frame to the last. As Far As I Can Walk well deserves its many awards from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the KineNove Film Festival. ~OY
