Everytime contains the shot of the year: a heart-stopping telephoto long take that dreamily fuses Psycho, Rear Window, The Birds, and, tragically, Vertigo. Austrian filmmaker Sandra Wollner’s astounding third feature is adept at talking around the central event that occurs in that sequence, infusing double-meanings in the gorgeous compositions and offhand exchanges, then depressurizing at key moments. United by tragedy, a mother, her young daughter, and a teenage boy embark on a trip to the Canary Islands for a family holiday that never happened. Under the glow of the coastal sun, past and present gradually overlap. Shot by cinematographer Gregory Oke, the entire film heavily evokes his already-iconic work on Aftersun—with radiant scenery, home video clips, and even a strobing club scene—while adding new wrinkles to this signature style, including concentrated doses of surreality. And Birgit Minichmayr gives one of those rare performances where you can see what she’s feeling, whose grief radiates from behind a brittle facade to fill any space. Everytime is a film rich with mystery that is sure to absolutely overwhelm an audience. ~OO
