When we first meet this documentary’s subject, Soraya, she is living in Turkey as a refugee from Iran. She is sixteen, doing everything she can to join her mother in Austria. Over the course of six years, Soraya sends footage to her uncle (director Mehrdad Oskouei) taken on her iPhone. She films escape attempts, her defeated return to Iran, her abusive relationship, and her continued efforts to make it to Austria by any means necessary. Her harrowing video diaries are interspersed with her stunning artwork. She creates sculptures, draws abstract portraits, and performs music. Every work that we see is a lightning strike within the film; her creativity is the anchor of her life. A Fox Under a Pink Moon is a testament to the unstoppable need for artistic expression even in the face of severe oppression, along with a portrait of a young woman with unwavering resilience and strength. ~AK
