Q&A with director Amy Jenkins following the screening
Amy Jenkins’ disarmingly candid chronicle of her son Adam’s life from childhood to young adulthood is epic in its intimacy. As Adam grows up and courageously navigates bureaucracy, doctor’s appointments, and his own teenage wasteland, this diaristic trans story gently expands into a textured and relatable portrait of a modern New England family. Jenkins’ camera captures tender moments of love and support as well as the stumbles in their evolving understanding of his experience. The perspectives of all the Sieswerdas are in constant conversation as Adam’s goals reshape their family unit. The film weaves together a trove of multimedia materials and endearingly awkward impromptu interviews, glimpsing Adam’s early years as a child already uncomfortable in his own skin and zeroing in on the liminal teenage years, when Adam’s identity gradually comes into focus—his tastes, his self-confidence, and his budding artistry, both as a musician and a filmmaker in his own right. This compassionate, heartfelt longitudinal autobiography can’t help but make you reflect on the ways that this story is playing out very differently throughout America. ~OO
