Director Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall is an explosive family drama disguised as a courtroom procedural. In a snowy, isolated cabin in the Alps, a couple – husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and wife Sandra (Sandra Huller) – live with their blind son. When the husband turns up dead, Sandra is suspected of his murder…and their son is the only witness. From that bare premise, a plot of enormous complexity begins to slowly unpeel itself, calling into question the very nature of truth and marriage itself. Gorgeously photographed and scripted, Triet’s film creates an atmosphere of crushing intensity, and Huller towers over the proceedings, giving one of the best screen performances in recent memory. ~SM
