Ukraine’s submission to the 2021 Academy Awards – Best International Feature Film

Winner of Grand Prize at Venice’s Orrizonti

Filmed almost entirely of long takes and still camera work, this hypnotic drama follows soldiers and scientists through a hellish near future in post war Ukraine. Not a casual watch, the lengthy sequences that make up the majority of Atlantis are meant to challenge viewers, but are unique in that they also provide meditative and generous space to ponder the various complex emotions these characters are sorting out along the way. By the end, you may feel disoriented, but through the fog…hope.” ~ Ryan Chartier, VTIFF programming committee

In 2025, Eastern Ukraine is a desert unsuitable for human habitation, water a dear commodity brought by trucks. A wall is being built on the border. Sergiy, a former soldier having trouble adapting to his new reality, meets Katya while she’s on a humanitarian mission dedicated to exhuming the past. Together, they try to return to some sort of normal life in which they are also allowed to fall in love again.
