Mia Hansen-Løve’s films don’t flinch from tackling big ideas. Whether it be the romance of architecture in Goodbye, First Love (2011) or the western canon of philosophical thought in Things to Come (2016), Hansen-Løve is adept at couching grand themes in poignant character studies. Her newest directorial effort explores the feminine creative spirit striving to distinguish itself within a monolithically male medium— Hansen-Løve’s own medium, in fact. Two filmmakers, married, played by Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth, travel to the island of Faro, renown haunt of Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman. There, they set to work on their separate screenplays. Their creative processes, like their careers, develop in stark contrast to each other, and what emerges is a breezy, wistful rumination on art, commerce, and gender set against bucolic island backdrops as one woman tries to figure out how to escape the shadow of two men: one, her husband; the other, an icon of European cinema. ~Travis Weedon
