There isn’t another film quite like it at the festival, or perhaps anywhere. Part loopily queer sci-fi thriller, part faux-naive political rallying cry, all glued together with candy–floss clouds of romantic reverie. Diamantino borrows all the traditional nasty–scientist tropes and rom-com clichés but applies a transgressional palette. It touches on the current refugee crises in Europe as well as the rise of extreme nationalism without for a minute abandoning its tongue–in–cheek tone. No words will prepare you for it, but we’re willing to bet that you’ll never look at fluffy puppies in the same way again. ~OY
