An extraordinary and powerful portrait of the evolving relationship between an eccentric suburban woman and a Walmart door greeter (who refers to himself as an “Aspy”) in this unconventional love story. The film gives us access to extraordinary intimate moments and the two main subjects seem oblivious of the camera. And yet, the shooting style is far-removed from typical vérité style documentary films: the cinematography is stylized, artfully desaturated, with static shots that unfold deliberately and are seemingly disengaged. At the same time, the rapport between the filmmakers and their principal characters appears so comfortable that there is never a suspicion of exploitation, more a sense of total equality between filmmakers and subjects.
