The surprise Oscar contender of the year. A phenomenon in Brazil, director Walter Salles’ (The Motorcycle Diaries, On the Road) first film in 12 years seemingly came out of nowhere to score nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best International Feature.
This powerful, poignant historical drama about Brazil’s military dictatorship in the early 1970s follows the story of Eunice Paiva (a captivating Fernanda Torres), the wife of a civil engineer and politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), who was disappeared by the regime. This intimate drama, based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, Rubens’ son, unfolds thrillingly as we see one family’s tragedy reflect the political strife of an entire country and lost generation.
Fernanda Torres became only the second Brazilian actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, after her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was nominated for Salles breakout film Central Station in 1998.
