Kills on Wheels was the sleeper of the 2017 Vermont International Film Festival and we just had to show it again. This is a tale of two aspiring comic book twentysomethings with disabilities from a Budapest rehab center who enter a new realm when they become involved with a hitman in a wheelchair. Recruiting the pair as his accomplices, he initiates them into the fast-paced world of gangsters, guns, and Serbian crime lords. The action-packed journey leads to a more tender tale in which the lines between reality and fantasy defy expectation at every turn. Here’s what Orly Yadin, on the VTIFF Programming Committee, wrote after first previewing the film: “I was riveted from the start and throughout. Witty combination of thriller and coming of age. No-one is spared in this film and it was refreshing to see a film that included people with disability who were neither inspirational nor objects of pity. It contains one scene, almost a throw-away, that says more about society’s attitudes towards physical disability than any earnest documentary I’ve ever seen – one tense moment and bingo! you get it.”
