Palestinian-Israeli writer-director Haj’s serio-comic Mediterranean Fever explores a complicated friendship-enmity between two middle-aged neighbors. The film builds up with small jenga blocks of humor and well-observed vignettes, so that we hardly notice when things go awry. Keeping us guessing right up to the end, this anecdotal comedy about depression is a refreshing look at the region’s political turmoil with a lovely friendship at its heart.
