Russia, 2022. Word has come down straight from the Kremlin that every Russian district needs to siphon eligible young men for military service in Ukraine. Gleb (Dmitriy Mazurov), head of the largest division of a faceless corporation, is tasked with selecting a set number of employees to send to war. As he tries his best to pass off responsibility, his latent paranoia starts bleeding into his home life. He suspects that his detached wife, Galina (Iris Lebedeva), is having an affair and has her followed. Twisting Claude Chabrol’s The Unfaithful Wife, by way of Adrian Lyne’s sleazier Hollywood remake, Russia’s most acclaimed dissident filmmaker spins a suspense yarn set in a modern realm where the corrupt ruling class lives outside consequences. Andrey Zvyagintsev has one of the most acclaimed filmographies this century. Regularly feted at major festivals—Minotaur won the Grand Prix at Cannes, the festival’s second-most prestigious award—his films The Return and Leviathan have both been hailed as among the best of the century. Minotaur might be his bleakest and most gripping film yet, a darkly comic, noir-tinged rebuke to the craven Russian elite whose cynicism reverberates into geo-political atrocities. ~OO
