This may be the first block-buster VTIFF has ever presented! We’re delighted to offer RRR on the big screen (by far the best way to watch) in its original Telugu language version.
“Rajamouli unfolds the many twists and turns of [the] story with such confidently rampaging energy that, by comparison, most Hollywood blockbusters feel anemic.” ~John Powers, NPR
“To call this the best blockbuster of 2022 is only partially accurate; it’s really several of the best blockbusters, plural, you’re apt to catch this year.” ~David Fear, Rolling Stone
RRR (or Rise! Roar! Revolt!) is an exhilarating, action-packed spectacular mythologizing two real-life freedom fighters who helped lead India’s fight for independence from the British Raj, Komaram Bheem (N.T Rama Rao Jr., aka Jr NTR) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan). Set in the 1920s before their fight for India’s independence began, RRR imagines a fictional meeting between the two, set into motion when a young Gond girl is stolen from her village by British soldiers.
With staggeringly choreographed action sequences, an all-timer of a musical number*), and a powerful story, RRR is pure big screen joy from start to finish. Audiences across the world have been won over, it’s a great big party, and you’re invited- come join!
*) The musical number “Naatu Naatu” (Telugu for “Native Native”) from RRR has also become a viral hit thanks to Charan and Rama Rao’s playful syncopated dance moves and infectious singing.
*** Note: The screening will start at 6:30PM (instead of our usual 7pm start time) and, as is customary for Indian films, RRR is designed for an intermission after a massive action scene (the “interval bang”). There will be a 5-10 minute intermission.
