Made and released before she died in August at the age of 88, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is an artful, uplifting documentary about the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel Prize winner who created Beloved and Song of Solomon. The film is indispensable and delivers what we crave most: hearing from this wise, eloquent and often funny interpreter of our society. Morrison talks directly to us about urgent matters of race, the black experience and the white gaze, as well as her life as an editor and writer and her childhood memories of growing up in a segregated society. Interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Sonia Sanchez and others speak to Morrison’s importance, while a tapestry of classic black art and photography threads through the film. But nothing is more compelling than Morrison’s own beauty, in voice and image, from her younger years to her authoritative maturity. ~AM
